Bearskin (From The Brothers Grimm) [VHS]

"A valiant soldier, wandering without cause or family after the Civil War, accepts the Devil's challenge to go for seven years without washing himself; cutting his hair, beard, or nails; or reciting the Lord's Prayer in exchange for limitless wealth. Draped in the Devil's cloak and the skin of a bear, the soldier travels the world, reveling in his riches until his appearance and odor become repugnant to all and especially to himself. At that point, the soldier learns to care about others and becomes the benefactor to a down-on-his-luck man who, in return for the soldier's generosity, offers one of his daughters in marriage." Booklist, January 1985
Winner of the American Film Festival Blue Ribbon The Parents Choice Award The American Library Association's "Notable Children's Film"

This relatively obscure Brothers Grimm tale has been updated and Americanized in this 19-minute story of a deal with the devil gone right, for once. A Civil War veteran without family or prospects is propositioned by a man with a plan and a cloven hoof. The soldier agrees to stop bathing and grooming for seven years while wandering the country in a bear hide in exchange for lifelong wealth. Just when the situation seems intolerable, "Bearskin" is able to help a man who, in return, promises him one of his three daughters as a bride. From this point the story is similar to the traditional version of Beauty and the Beast. The selfish daughters balk, leaving the kind daughter to come to the aid of their father--and find reward in the end. The performances, costumes, and camera work in this "From the Brothers Grimm" series are professional and charming without being cloying. The content and pace will engage students 8 and older, and their parents. --Kimberly Heinrichs

H.M.S. Repulse

Another old public domain picture (by age) of this lovely ship although I don't know the date taken.

I once met a C.P.O. survivor of this ship early after I joined the R.N.
He was in the next bed to mine in the naval hosptal at Haslar in Gosport., where I was recovering from a bout of pneumonia. He was a great chap and often had the ward laughing with his sence of humour. We once bought a tatty old bearskin rug at a hosptal charity shop sale, rigged it up in the ward broom cupboard so that when the night sister opened the broom cupboard to inspect it the thing fell on her. The shriek was wonderfull to hear echoing in the gloom of the ward that night! She was a very strict sister, always giving the nurses a hard time so we felt that we owed her one.
I used to wheel the old CPO around in his wheel chair and he was always up for a lark to relieve the monotany of the ward.
I did'nt even know that he was dying until he crossed the bar without a whimper, never a complaint, always a smile.

Two and a Half Men: The Complete Third Season

Two and a Half Men: The Complete Third Season

TWO AND A HALF MEN:COMP THIRD SEASON - DVD Movie

In the third season of Two and a Half Men, the usually sensible Alan (Jon Cryer) ends up dating someone young enough to be his daughter, as well as a senior citizen old enough to be his mother. His playboy brother Charlie (Charlie Sheen) dates a woman who worships Satan, and also strikes up a relationship with a proper ballet dancer who refuses to sleep with him (but does ask him to donate some sperm). And Alan's 11-year-old son Jake (Angus T. Jones), who has just started dating, proves to be the most mature member of the oddball household. All 24 episodes of the series, which originally aired during the 2005-2006 television season, are included in this concise four-disc set. There are some surprises this season, including a death and a wedding (not on the same day). There are also plenty of vulgar moments; for instance, Jake not only learns about booty calls, but he also finds out the about why some men use Viagra. With guest stars ranging from Jon Lovitz, Sheen's real-life dad Martin Sheen, and Cloris Leachman (as Alan's older woman), Two and a Half Men delivers the laughs. Always hilarious, Leachman is priceless in her role as Norma. Contemplating Charlie's "relationship" with a beautiful young sex kitten, Alan scoffs, "It must be fun dating a woman whose IQ is the same as her age." Charlie shoots back, "I could say the same about you." Touche. --Jae-Ha Kim

Norooz
(Persian New Year)
March 21st.

Norooz spirit:

Norooz is the Iranian new year festival. The word itself literally means "new day" in Persian language and the festival marks the beginning of the solar year as well as the new year on the Iranian and several other national calenders.

At its core, the Noroozfestival celebrates the awakening of the natural life. This awakening symbolizes the triumph of good, winning against the evil forces of darkness that are represented by the Winter.

Noroozis the point when the oppressive presence of the cold Winter finally begins to retrieve with the commencement of the lively and hopeful Spring. This symbolic and poetic change corresponds to the mathematical instance of the sun leaving the zodiac of Pisces and entering the zodiacal sign of Aries, also known as the Spring Equinox.

As described above, Noroozrepresents much of what Iranian/Persian character, history, politics and religion are all about. For centuries, Persians have applied the Noroozspirit to every dark challenge that has come their way. This spirit has made Noroozfar more than just a New year celebration!

In harmony with the rebirth of nature, the Iranian New Year Celebration, or NorooZ, always begins on the first day of spring. Norooz ceremonies are symbolic representations of two ancient concepts - the End and the Rebirth; or Good and Evil. A few weeks before the New Year, Iranians clean and rearrange their homes. They make new clothes, bake pastries and germinate seeds as sign of renewal. The ceremonial cloth is set up in each household. Troubadours, referred to as Haji Firuz, disguise themselves with makeup and wear brightly colored outfits of satin. These Haji Firuz, singing and dancing, parade as a carnival through the streets with tambourines, kettle drums, and trumpets to spread good cheer and the news of the coming new year.

Last Wednesday of the year(Chahar Shanbeh Suri) : On the eve of last Wednesday of the year, literally the eve of Red Wednesday or the eve of celebration, bonfires are lit in public places and people leap over the flames, shouting:
Give me your beautiful red color
And take back my sickly pallor!

With the help of fire and light symbols of good, we hope to see our way through this unlucky night - the end of the year- to the arrival of springs longer days. Traditionally, it is believed that the living were visited by the spirits of their ancestors on the last day of the year. Many people specially children, wrap themselves in shrouds symbolically reenacting the visits. By the light of the bonfire, they run through the streets banging on pots and pans with spoons called Gashog-Zani to beat out the last unlucky Wednesday of the year, while they knock on doors to ask for treats. Indeed, Halloween is a Celtic variation of this night.

In order to make wishes come true, it is customary to prepare special foods and distribute them on this night. Noodle Soup a filled Persian delight, and mixture of seven dried nuts and fruits, pistachios, roasted chic peas, almond, hazelnuts, figs, apricots, and raisins.
Fal-Gush

This is another ritual in which someone makes a wish and stands at the corner of an intersection , or on a terrace or behind a wall. That person will know his fortune when he overhears conversation of a passerby.
Haft-Seen

A few days prior to the New Year, a special cover is spread on to the Persian carpet or on a table in every Persian household. This ceremonial table is called cloth of seven dishes, (each one beginning with the Persian letter Sinn). The number seven has been sacred in Iran since the ancient times, and the seven dishes stand for the seven angelic heralds of life-rebirth, health, happiness, prosperity, joy, patience, and beauty.
The symbolic dishes consist of:

1. Sabzeh or sprouts, usually wheat or lentil representing rebirth.
2. Samanu is a pudding in which common wheat sprouts are transformed and given new life as a sweet, creamy pudding and represents the ultimate sophistication of Persian cooking.
3. Seeb means apple and represents health and beauty.
4. Senjed the sweet, dry fruit of the Lotus tree, represents love. It has been said that when lotus tree is in full bloom, its fragrance and its fruit make people fall in love and become oblivious to all else.
5. Seer which is garlic in Persian, represents medicine.
6. Somaq sumac berries, represent the color of sunrise; with the appearance of the sun Good conquers Evil.
7. Serkeh or vinegar, represents age and patience.

To reconfirm all hopes and wishes expressed by the traditional foods, other elements and symbols are also on the sofreh):

* a few coins placed on the sofreh represent prosperity and wealth;
* a basket of painted eggs represents fertility.
* a Seville orange floating in a bowl of water represents the earth floating in space.
* a goldfish in a bowl represents life and the end of astral year-picas.
* a flask of rose wat

Hot Wings & Rug Burns: Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Blonde

Hot Wings & Rug Burns: Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Blonde

Set amidst the 1990s in the Twin Cities - love, basketball, sex, David Lee Roth, dating, Snoopy, bar hopping, Camel Lights, and Evonne Goolagong collide to concoct this unique tale. Of course, these aren't your typical ingredients for a comedy, but this isn't your typical comedy. This is the story of a jackass and how he becomes a real man.

Life is a clever cocktail of interesting moments, sinister monotony, and sublime mistakes. Jamie Tembreaux, a struggling playwright in Minneapolis knows that all too well. Unlike the famous Peter Pan Syndrome, Jamie suffers from a different Disney Disorder altogether, The Pinocchio Syndrome, which can only be disclosed within the confines of this tale. Forcing Jamie to realize he's twenty-five and has never really been in love.

Luckily for Jamie, he does have the support of his friends, but "Trick" Dunbar and Andrew Case are just as confused with their lives as Jamie seemingly is with his own. Torn between the fetching artist he's just met and an old flame who happens to be Andrew's little sister, Jamie navigates the dangerous waters of bachelorhood without a clue.

With the help of another friend from college Jo Fabre, Jamie searches for answers at the only place that makes sense to him - his childhood home. There, Jamie discovers where his life diverted from its natural path to an entirely new one. Jamie explores his past choices and their consequences like never before. He deflects his personal ordeals through the use of humor, thereby divulging uncompromising insight into the male psyche.

The novel is a dizzying leap into the shallow end of the pool of life. And somewhere amidst the infinite spectrum between a Blue Fairy and a Great Whale lies a broken-hearted hero. A coming-of-age tale with a twist and a comedy with plenty of edge. HOT WINGS & RUG BURNS is a wild look at one of the scariest challenges facing young adults of any generation – the opposite sex.

Dining room rug

The dining room (like the living room, which you can see a glimpse of here) had a modern carpet that I've been intending to replace forever. When we were painting the room, I spilled paint in two places on the carpet, which incensed Darwin, but I assured him we were replacing it anyway. More than a year later, we finally bought a Persian rug, rolled out the old and rolled in the new. I like it much better, and more of the pretty wood floor is showing.

Fall Mug Rug

Fall Mug Rug

Rearranged my mug rug for the local modern quilt guild fall/autumn themed mug rug swap. I went and bought some orange since I didn't have any in my stash. It actually has little acorns in it and that's the main reason I bought it :) I changed his arm too, and that made him look much better.
